Since 2012, Carrie VanSlyke has enjoyed teaching violin and viola to both children and adults. Teaching in Halifax, Nova Scotia has not only allowed her to use her Suzuki training to teach classical repertoire but has also given her the opportunity to introduce fiddling to her students. She is experienced in teaching private lessons, group lessons, and in conducting both beginner and youth orchestras. She has worked for the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, the Scotia Suzuki School of Music, hosted youth orchestras from America, co-hosted the Nova Scotia Suzuki Institute, and most recently she has run a private strings studio from her home.

Beginning September 2024, she and her family will move to Nashville, Tennessee where she will have a private strings studio in her home. Carrie enjoys the challenge of creating an individual program for each student. Her training at the College Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati and the Schulich School of Music of McGill University and her professional experiences have given her the knowledge to understand what is required for excellence in string training. Her extensive Suzuki training also enables her to help her students build confidence and passion as they enjoy becoming successful in their musical pursuits. Her students have won numerous gold medals for the highest achievements in the Royal Conservatory of Music exams.

About the Suzuki Method

Every Child Can!

As a Suzuki teacher, I believe that musical ability can be developed in any child. I work to find an individualized teaching style for every student as each student learns very differently.

Parental Involvement

Parents play an active role in the success of their child's development and learning. It is crucial that the parent attend each lesson and take detailed notes.

Delayed Reading

Note reading will be introduced once the student is very comfortable with the instrument (and around the time the child feels confident reading books).

Technique

Carrie is passionate about excellent technique as the foundation for all of her students. Technique is introduced through the context of the Suzuki repertoire as well as the RCM syllabus to further expand the student's repertoire.

Additional Studio Information

Lesson rates and studio policy will be emailed to prospective students before registering for lessons. Please email Carrie at carrie@leaf-music.ca with additional questions.
